Is Your Car Battery in Medford Affected by the Weather?

Most cars use lead acid batteries to deliver amps to the engine when starting up the vehicle. The battery also powers all of the car's electronics, including its lights, infotainment systems and power windows. Extreme temperatures affect the performance of the battery.

The upper range for optimal battery operating conditions is 77 degrees Fahrenheit. For each 15 degrees the temperature increases, the battery's capacity decreases by half. When the temperature drops to 32 degrees Fahrenheit, the battery's capacity is 20 percent less than its maximum level. When temperatures drop to -22 degrees Fahrenheit, battery capacity decreases by about 50 percent.

At our service center here at Lithia Chrysler Jeep Dodge of Medford, we can check the voltage and cold cranking amps of your battery. If you have any other questions about how temperatures impact battery performance, stop in to see us any time.
